Personal, Social and Emotional Development
This is given a high priority. We believe in fostering good behaviour and social development using a calm and relaxed approach. We aim to give the children confidence, self-esteem and independence. We encourage good relationships with their peers, working well in groups and sensitivity to others.
Communication, Language of the World
In this subject we do not believe in pushing children to learn before they are ready. We subscribe to the view commonly held in other countries of Europe, where educational standards are very often higher than in the UK, that formal teaching too young can actually be damaging. Nonetheless we are able to demonstrate outstanding results with our methods derived from structured play, as confirmed by our OFSTED reports. Children learn the first elements of reading and writing. They learn to recognise the alphabet and write their names. They also learn basic Spanish with the help of a Spanish speaking member of nursery staff.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
Children explore their local environment other people and cultures and features of the natural and manmade world. Pets are kept, children grow plants and cook and they have liberal use of a computer in their own room. Children visit the local shops and the fire station and go on trips to interesting and adventurous places.
Physical development
There are many opportunities for children to develop manipulative skills and imaginative, confident co-ordination, both inside and out of doors. The nurseries employ the skills of specialist visiting music, movement and football skills teachers and ballet is a popular option.
Creative Development
We believe in providing a huge variety of means by which children can express themselves creatively whether on paper, through music, in storytelling or role play. The pinnacles of this are the annual Christmas concert and summer time productions. Although it is common at other nurseries for the above elements of the curriculum to begin at three years old, we believe that certain elements can be commenced much earlier than this and this is reflected in each child’s development programme.
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
We encourage the children to say and use number in context. They learn to count up to ten everyday objects and recognise number up to ten and beyond if they are ready to do so. We develop their knowledge with practical activities and discussion, which helps their vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting.
At Prepcare, we feel that it is most important to give the children guidelines and boundaries to enable them to develop at their own pace.
